1. What did we do?

For the copy and paste hacking assignment, we had a little time to look for an image that we thought would be fun to “change”. I chose images that I took on my phone and my drawing of Mario.

From then, we changed the image from .jpg to .txt. We did this by clicking on the image and once again to select the title and used the keyboard to change the format. After this, we opened the image and saw a large code in a document. We manipulated the code by copying sections of it and pasting it in random places throughout the document. Then we saved the image and changed it back to .jpg.

When the image is opened back up again, it will be pixelated, discolored, black, grey or overlaid. Viewing the image in a browser may change the appearance.

2. What did you learn?

I learned how to turn an image into a code and change the physical make up of the image by copy and pasting random sections of the code.

I also learned how to convert a .jpg into a .txt document.

3. What do you want to know now?

I would like to know how to recreate what I did to make the blue-ish tone at the bottom of my image with the steering wheel. I tried many times to get a color change but I mainly got overlays in my images.

4. How might we work with these tools in

classrooms?

I believe that this would be a fun way to teach students to become familiar with using the computer and to show students that computers can be used to do more than what we think. It can seem tedious after a while trying to get a cool result, but I had a lot of fun with it, I think that students in a classroom would as well. I could see students using their images in a collage or some sort of digital artwork.
