1. What did we do?
For this assignment we explored the website Scratch.mit.edu
First, we went over the basic controls of how to move the character around and then we had time to make our own “Sprite” (which are the characters). Our sprites needed to have a certain kind of emotion- my fish was happy/curious. We then animated our characters and watched everyones creations at the very end. We said a few things about the emotions of the sprites that everyone created.
Later on I went home and made another creation. This one is a happy butterfly landing on a flower.
2. What did you learn?
I learned how to move the sprite from side to side, and how to draw on this website. I also learned how to find my way through the website and how to “follow” other pages.
3. What do you want to know now?
I would like to use this website more often and make different things. As I was exploring I found out that you can make games on it as well. I would like to learn how to make my own game.
I would also like to know all of the other possibilities in scratch.
4. How might we work with these tools in
classrooms?
I could use what I learned in scratch and show tips and tricks to students and let them take off and make their own creations. I believe that 5th graders and older students would really enjoy this website if they were taught how to use it in a classroom setting. I believe that it not only teaches creativity, but it also teaches patience as well as thinking in sequences since the computer reads one step at a time.
